The Poughkeepsie Galleria is partnering with the New York Blood Center (NYBC) to host a lifesaving blood drive on Wednesday, January 24th, in response to an urgent call for donations. The event will take place at the Galleria in their Community Room on the second level, providing an accessible and convenient location for community members to give the gift of life.

NYBC has recently declared a blood emergency following a significant 30% drop in blood donations during the holiday season, resulting in 6,500 fewer donations and critically low blood supplies. Donations of all blood types are urgently needed, with Types O- and B- in particularly short supply, down to a dangerously low 1-3 day reserve.

Blood donations are essential for surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatments, and managing chronic illnesses, but winter months pose unique challenges, including inclement weather, seasonal illnesses, and a decrease in blood drives at schools and workplaces. These factors have exacerbated an already fragile blood supply, putting patients and hospitals at risk.

“The months following the holiday season are always a difficult time for the blood supply,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Vice President at NYBC. “We’re urging everyone who is eligible to donate blood to join us in replenishing the region’s blood supply and start the new year by saving lives.”

The Poughkeepsie Galleria invites community members to participate in the blood drive and make a difference. Donors can sign up online at the New York Blood Center’s website, but walk-ins are also welcome on the day of the event. Every blood donation has the power to save up to three lives, and the need has never been greater.
